“Are you still dancing?”

That’s one of the first questions my homeopath – Dr. Vladmir Schmitsman-will ask me at each one of my visits to his clinic.  And I look forward to the question everytime.  It makes me relax and puts a smile on my face, reminding me of what kind of medicine I really believe in- medicine of the whole self, not just the outer physical body, but that which helps our inner peace and balance and happiness as well.  I believe that type of medicine manifests itself in our appearance, in our cells, and in our overall energy for life.  And that can be deeply transforming in so many positive ways.

Dr. Schmitsman’s question is not being asked just to make conversation; it’s not something light he brings up just to take my mind off the health issue at hand.  He sees it as actually being part of the solution, as do I.  I am grateful that he reminds me of this every time I see him.

Activities such as dance and other art forms stir up something inside of us that we need in order to fully help our bodies and hearts heal. They are therapeutic, on such a profound level, and can often be the best medicine if we open ourselves up to seeing the depth and beauty of these art forms.

I have, however, found it quite difficult to find health practictioners who are supportive of this type of ‘medicine’, individuals who take it seriously enough to see that it matters.   What a relief it is, therefore, when I do get the pleasure of meeting another doctor, or fitness instructor, or chiropractor who encourages the idea that we trust and listen to our bodies, and that we do the things that bring us joy, because our bodies and whole beings will be grateful for it all around.

This page is dedicated to health practitioners who have this more open, holistic mentality to the health of our body and minds and spirits.  So far, my list is small.  So if you would like to add to the list, please email dancemefree@gmail.com to let me know of any doctors, physicians, surgeons, naturopaths, physiotherapists, chiropractors, yoga, fitness, or martial art trainers, etc, who you think fit into this description.  I would love to see this list grow!
